Welcome To Afghanistan

Boots on Ground, Shook By Mortar Fire

“Welcome to Afghanistan!”

I still remember the first time I felt the ground shake below me. It was early August 2003. My unit was given intel that one of the guard towers on Bagram Air Base would be attacked that evening. We had only been in country for a few days, and none of us knew what to expect.

I remember thinking to myself, “ You have trained for this, and you are ready.”, but as my heart beat strong in a thunderous, and tachycardic fashion, I wasn’t convinced.

After a couple of hours I eventually fell asleep, and then BOOM!!

I jumped out of my cot and put on all of my gear, in what seemed to be less than one minute. I ran to the door and out to the bunker only to find our Mortar-men shooting off 120mm illumination rounds to give our guard towers some extra visibility.

Shaken to the core, I headed back to my cot for some much needed shut eye, and a sense of calm. Welcome to Afghanistan!
