Not since 1959

Florida State and Florida have not played each other with both teams having losing records since 1959. One of the more historical rivalries coming alongside of Ohio State vs. Michigan and Alabama vs. Auburn, FSU vs. Florida is right there with the best of them. However this year is different, both teams having losing records and both teams without any playoff indication coming into the last game of the year. FSU came into this game as winning the last four and hoping to keep riding that wave capping off their 2017 season.

This game is actually how my love for FSU started back when I was in elementary and have watched it ever since. Wanting to bring back that rivalry and love for competition, I always want this to be an important game of beating the best team there is.

Florida State is coming off a large scoring win versus an inferior opponent which is usually scheduled late in the season to break up the long road to finish. Something I think they needed for confidence and to keep pushing through until the absolute end of their 2017 season. I know they haven’t had the perfect season like they were anticipating or projected but I never want a team to lose sight and give up. They definitely came out firing in this game and you can tell the veteran leadership on the team let the team know what they wanted to achieve on Saturday.

Florida state came out and took an early 14–7 lead based up their defense stepping up to the plate and forcing an early touchdown off an interception. Something to see as their offense struggles at some points behind the true freshman, James Blackman, the defense needs to step up and force turnovers. Which they did early and often versus Florida. Florida State took that lead and increased it to 24–13 at halftime. The turnovers continued in the 2nd half as well and Florida State kept on the gas pedal increasing the lead and the final score being 38–22.

Even though this game meant nothing for playoffs, it was a lot more to these two teams. If you don’t win a game all year but you beat Florida or vice a versa, you still have a successful season in most fan’s eyes. Also there is more streaks or records to hold on to and FSU needed this win to be eligible for a bowl game. They are making up one of their cancelled games in order to get in the 12 game season they were guaranteed and winning that will let them enter a bowl for the 37th consecutive season.

However on Florida’s side this game definitely eliminates them from seeing a bowl game and also the chances of anything over a .500 winning record. Also they are open for a new head coach and welcoming in someone soon as deals are being finalized.
