Online dating vs Offline dating.

In my previous blog I discussed about our offline and online identity and if they were the same. I briefly mentioned the show Catfish which airs every week on MTV. Today my blog will explain what Catfish is and how online dating affects our online identity. I will examine online dating as part of online identity as this is what my university project consists of.

So what is Catfish and when did it begin? Someone who pretends to be someone else, especially on the internet. Found on anywhere from Instagram to Twitter to chat sites, these people use fake pictures to disguise who they are.The TV Show is an American reality-based documentary television series airing on MTV about the truths and lies of online dating. The series is based on the 2010 film Catfish and is co-hosted by Nev Schulman and Max Joseph.

How many of the people in that pool have real online identities or offline and online identities match? We are trusting people based on a profile which consists of online interests and a good selfie. It can become addicting to some, who never meet offline or are looking for the next pretty face. Beware of the Digital Pen-Pal Syndrome. Addiction? A word we are now associating with who meet or who we are trying to be online. How do we really know someone if we haven’t met them in person? It bewilders me! How do we allow ourselves to accept people we don’t know through the average friend request. I know if I do not know the person or have not met the person offline I do not accept their request, but yet here is online dating forcing us to meet strangers online, it is a new world. Online identity is changing and being created every day. The online dating websites encourage our online identity problems. People lie about their age, weight, height, income, and marital status. Singles get frustrated after a few bad dates.

A classical example of how we mistake those for true online identity compare to their offline identity. There is no vision of Cupid and his arrow anymore just that your laptop, mobile device and your login details are the true Cupids of this day and age. We are being brought together through online identity and yet we are becoming lost with online identity, becoming obsessed and addicted.

Offline dating offers a chance to meet people in person but still who hasn’t checked out a persons Facebook, Instagram and Twitter profile before he or she arrives. Is online dating healthy? some will agree and disagree a fair representation of this would be to watch the show Catfish it has some benefits and disadvantages towards the online dating websites, mostly people end up in an unfair situation because there are certain people who abuse and manipulate the online dating websites and other social media platforms to making fake identities and end up hurting people along the way.

So what do we do? Do we proceed and pretend that online dating is a key problem in people hiding their online identity or do we become smarter, be ourselves experience both online and offline dating. There are so many options for singles in this digital dating age but we have a duty to not let it become an obsession, an addiction enjoy it, enjoy it freely upon wisely.
