Making plans for our home renovation

Three years ago we moved into our first house. It’s a three storey, solid stone doer-upper in a lovely town in South Wales which we thought we’d be able to improve ourselves. It had taken us a while to get to a stage we were we actively pushing forward with the renovation so a few months ago we had begun work on the middle floor of the house.

As it stands the middle floor is pretty much open plan, the stairs were boxed in with a door leading to the corridor but we tore most of that wall down, until we discovered a rather flimsy looking supporting column on top of which was a single old scaffolding plank. It was solely responsible for stopping the floor above us caving in and didn’t really look up to the job! Our house is 160 years old with lots of quirky and questionable parts to it, this is one such discovery that led us to believe that the house had definitely been worked on by cowboys (another one was finding a door frame attached to a wall via a broom handle — resourceful to say the least!). They had boxed the plank in to make it look the right shape and size of an RSJ so they were obviously trying to cover up a crappy job. When we saw this we immediately stopped our demolition and decided to call in the experts.

I’ve detailed how I used the website below.

This was before we took out the part of the wall that boxed the stairs in. Plus this was my first draft and not 100% accurate with measurements etc.

This is my first draft of what we wanted our middle floor to look like. It was so easy and quick to do! But you haven’t seen what else this website can do.

This is the 2D floor plan with a little more colour and detail…

… and THIS is the 3D render of it! This is the part that I LOVE! It makes it so easy to see actually how it might look, how the layout might work and the feel of it. You can even play with the time of day and see if your lighting is adequate (no idea how realistic that is though).

There are some things about the platform that I’d like more control over but as it is it gives a pretty good idea of your project and its a great tool to use if you want to be more specific with your builder (mine was extremely impressed as I’d done multiple versions showing where the plumbing would go, light switches etc etc.)

In the below one you can see that I’ve honed in on just the bathroom as I was struggling to picture the layout and decor of it.

The floor plan of proposed bathroom

Can you tell I like the renders! The decor isn’t going to be like the images above (due to the platform constraints) but it does give a nice idea of the general look and feel of what we’re going for.

In short, I’d highly recommend using floorplanner.com for any of your renovation plans. If you have any questions, feel free to comment!

P.S. Not an ad ;)
