Inspiration

I had well and truly hit a wall when it came to what I wanted to write about and I had reached the point of over thinking and over analyzing every possible option in front of me, so I decided to take a step back. I allocated a week in which I wouldn’t do any work on this module, if I had an idea then I would write it down and come back to it at the end of the week if I still believed it was a good idea. This turned out to be the best decision I could have made because that was when inspiration hit. I was with a group of friends watching To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) when one of them said the age old line “I wish this would happen to me”. At the time we all laughed and agreed and carried on as normal but later on it wouldn’t leave my head. There’s always been a debate around the ability of the mass media to change our fundamental beliefs and morals and I have always been on the side that agrees that we are who we are at our core and nothing can change that. However, does that mean that the mass media we’re surrounded by, especially movies, can’t change our opinions? If that were true then political propaganda films, the news, information videos and so many more pieces of film that we see on a daily basis would be made completely redundant, so surely there’s something there. I did what I had planned to begin with and wrote the idea down to come back to in a few days but I wasn’t able to just leave it alone. I lasted until the next morning before I ended up going online to look into this more and that was how I knew I’d landed on what I am passionate enough about to want to do my dissertation on.

While I know that at some point my question may change slightly in wording or direction, I also knew that if I didn’t do this one I’d regret it later in the process. This led me to finally being able to form my dissertation question: Do Romantic Comedies have a lasting effect on how we form relationships?
