What does a BI Data Engineer actually do, what do they earn and where is the difference to the “normal” Data Engineer.

The BI Data Engineer is of course very similar to the Data Engineer in terms of skillset. However, they have specialized in data processes in the BI area. They may therefore work less in the Data Lake area and be less concerned with the development (of cloud) architectures in the lower frame, but rather take over in the interface to the business. Technically speaking, this is between the Data Warehouse and the BI front layer.

However, one can imagine that this role is more likely to occur in larger companies with a lot of data, otherwise these tasks are more likely to be taken over by the Data Engineer or by self-service BI solutions and by the normal employee.

Otherwise, the BI Data Engineer takes over the part where it transitions from the Data Lakehouse or Warehouse to Data Marts. Again, a lot of cleansing, aggregation and enrichment data processes are necessary before the data is presented in BI layers. They will also look after more functional BI layers such as Qlik and Tableau, for example, because here, too, very large and complex processes can often be defined.

But now perhaps the most interesting part, what can you earn as a BI Data Engineer? Here, it must be said that the profession is very rare, so that you can find information about this mainly from the USA. The average BI Data Engineer salary in the United States is 112,219 US $ — the salary range typically falls between 97,097 US $ and 128,466 US $[1].
