Helping a World That Needs Help

Don’t be Limited by Your Posts

Every day something pops up on my various social media accounts from friends complaining about, cheering on or making some commentary regarding an incident or a political decision. What they are commenting on is not what I’m writing about, I’m writing about the fact that they’ve shared their commentary and why I never have the desire to do the same.

After writing from your heart and clicking on post, do you have a strong feeling that you are making a difference to change the world? My guess is probably not. For me, not at all. Even if I’m bringing awareness to a topic, I still feel helpless and know that anything I write will not actually change the world. It will, however, invite an argument or an agreement. Nothing will actually change but the number of likes attributed to my account.

With the multitude of discussions that are alive and in our country, from gun control to immigration and education issues, from the #metoo movement and constant reminders of the need for improved mental health resources, choosing which fight to be a part of comes with the ability to make a real impact.

Let your voice be heard and don’t remain silent on anything you feel passionate about, but recognize the difference between posting an opinion on an issue such as immigration, and volunteering at a local center against sexual assault.

We need voices; however, navigating through the muck of what is truth and what is false is cumbersome for someone who is responding with a knee-jerk reaction. Is it change when false information is spread like the media virus we find irresistible?

We need voices, we need your opinions and with that, we need the truth, but ultimately your hands will make the most impact.

Sign a ballot, vote, donate and volunteer. Don’t limit your passions to a post.
